Opening Ceremony

Bay Area is planning a spectacular opening ceremony keeping with the tradition set in 1999. More then 100 local talents will be participating in the Opening and Closing ceremonies. Memories from your yester years - from your stay in India, to your first visit to the United States - will be revisited in these ceremonies. If you were born here, your fond memories of home when you visit Kolkata will be revived too. We are fortunate to have the guidance of Tanushree Shankar for choreographing the dance for the shows, Joy Sarkar for Music Direction and  Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury for his direction of Audio/Visual Effects. We would like to thank Indranil Roy Chowdhury and Arna Seal for the script.

Tanushree Shankar

Tanushree Shankar needs no Introduction. Internationally reputed dancer Tanusree Shankar is the choreographer and the chief inspiration of the troupe bearing her name. Tanusree, who was trained for seven years under Amala Shankar, has developed a kind of choreography, which reaches out to audiences worldwide.

Her choreography is not a combination of classical dances, but is outstanding and original, giving concrete shape to the music that inspires it and is based on the Shankar technique of “New Dance”, following the path shown by Uday Shankar. Tanushree Shankar now leads the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company, one of the leading exponents of contemporary dance forms in India. She has evolved her own modern idiom by marrying the grace and beauty of traditional Indian dances with the soul of modern western ballet
expressions. She has been inspired both by her illustrious lineage as much by the folk and regional dance forms of India.

Joy Sarkar

Sourav Sarkar, popularly known as Joy Sarkar, is a very successful music director and a renowned guitarist of recent times in the world of contemporary bengali music.During his 10 years of career as music director, he has worked with Haimanti Shukla, Shreya Ghoshal, Srikanto Acharya, Lopamudra Mitra, Shilajit, Indrani Sen, Rupankar, Shubhomita, Raghab, Monomoy and many other artists.

Joy Sarkar got the prestigious ZEE MUSIC AWARD as the best music director of the year 2005. As a guitarist,he has already performed in US, UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Kuwait, Qatar, Hong Kong and almost all over India. He is also a regular musician of All India Radio and Television since last 15 years. He took part in NABC-1996, held in Houston(with Arati Mukherjee)and NABC-1999, held in San Fransisco(with Lopamudra Mitra). He also scored the music for the opening ceremony of NABC-2008, held in Toronto, which earned a lot of appreciation.

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, known as Tony in the industry, is the director of Bengali films ‘Anuranan’ and Antaheen. Aniruddha hails from a theatre background and started his professional stint as a production person in television serials. In 1995 October his own venture ‘Opus Communication’ was born, which is in the business of creating AD Films. Ever since 12 years, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury is a successful commercial AD Film Maker and has done wonders with brands like Coca Cola, Tata Steel, Apollo Group of Hospitals, Hero Honda, Nestle, Reckitt Benckiser, Britannia Industries, Lever Brothers, Phillips and Smithkline Beecham among many others.

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury – director of the Bengali film Anuranan – was bestowed the Sixteenth Aravindan Puraskaram for the year 2006 instituted by Chalachithra Film Society, Trivandrum for the best debutant filmmaker. His much awaited film Antaheen will also be premiered at NABC 2009.

Alokananda Roy

Alokananda Roy  career in film began in Satyajit Ray’s film Kanchenjungha. She played main character of  Manisha, After a gap of some time, she worked  for Calcutta Door Darshan. Buddhadeb Dasgupta brought her back to films in Phera in the female lead. She has given great performances in Paramitar Ek Din directed by Aparna Sen,and Utsav directed by Rituparno Ghosh . She has many films that she is working on now. We are honoured to have her join us as part of the Opening Ceremony.


Shayan Munshi is an Indian model and actor who made his debut in the 2003 Bollywood film Jhankaar Beats. Munshi hails from Kolkata. He is noted most in Bengali Cinema for his role in Bong Connection. We are fortunate to have Shayan join us in our endevour.



Sreenanda Shankar

Sreenanda Shankar Daughter of Tanushree Shankar and the Late Ananda Shankar  is part of our Opening Ceremony. She is an aspiring actress waiting for the right film role to roll in.

Team USA

We would also like to introduce Team USA  who are the backbone of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Dalia Sen is a well known name in performing arts in Bay Area. Dalia did not receive any formal training in any single dance form but instead like all Bengali families she received training in Indian classical music. Besides having a successful career in Software Industry and being the mother of a 2 year old she always seems to find time to pursue her passion, dance. She started dancing at a tender age of 4. She has had many successful directorial production in Bayarea: "Tasher Desh" ,"Rangoli, "Chitrangada ", "Colors of India" to name a few. She is leading NABC2009's effort to create a historical Opening ceremony . To help her in her efforts she is joined By Prodoshsarkar for Opening Ceremony and Dipanwita Sengupta for Closing Ceremony.

Prodosh Sarkar an avid listener of all kinds of Indian music, be it classical, folk, or instrumental. But Tabla, is one of his passions. Apart from tabla he takes immense interest in Bengali Drama. He has directed many Bengali plays in the Bay area and organizes Natya Mala every year.Dipanwita Sengupta is a student of Nrityavilash Suchandra Banerjee of "The Nupur Dance Academy" and also received training from the Kathak maestro NrityaShiromoni GuruBandana Sen. Currently, Dipanwita imparts training to both children and adults in Kathak, folk dances and Rabindra Nritya.She has been actively choreographing and participating in programs for many Bay Area organizations.

Surajit Sengupta  the Chairperson of NABC 2009  is actively involved in most of the Creative aspects of the Opening/Closing Ceremony.
